Frequently Asked Questions

Does my insurance cover me at HNMC?

We do accept Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield. If you do not have BC/BS many other plans will cover a percentage of the visit. We provide you with a copy of your invoice with all the information needed to bill your insurance company. We advise that you check with your insurance provider before scheduling an appointment.

Can the physicians at HNMC order lab tests?

Yes. Physicians at HNMC are licensed physicians in the state of Connecticut. We are able to order lab tests and other diagnostic examinations.

What can I expect during my first office visit?

The initial office visit can be different for each person. Typically you will spend approximately one hour with the physician. During that hour you will discuss your current complaint, your medical history, family history and lifestyle history. There will also be an appropriate physical exam. Usually treatment will be started during the first visit.

How long will it take for me to get better?

This of course varies for each patient. It is common for patients to notice improvement of chronic complaints within a few weeks, with continued improvement over months. Acute illnesses often have very rapid results with naturopathic medications, with improvement seen in hours to days.

Can I use HNMC as my primary care provider?

The doctors at HNMC can effectively treat both acute and chronic illnesses and in this way can function as primary care providers. We do recommend our patients maintain a relationship with their MD, however.

Will I get a prescription such as an antibiotic from my doctor at HNMC?

No. Naturopathic physicians are not licensed to prescribe medications in the state of Connecticut. We do have extensive training in pharmacology and are able to discuss and recommend a course of treatment using conventional therapies, but that is not our method of treatment. Often, there are very effective naturopathic treatments that can be used instead.

Does HNMC have naturopathic medicines available on site?

Yes. HNMC has a full naturopathic medicinary stocked with herbal, homeopathic, nutritional and functional remedies. We carry only the highest quality products, most of which can not be purchased outside a physicians office or pharmacy to ensure our patients receive the best care possible.

Winter Wellness
Humidify your home during the dry winter months. Humidity during the winter should be around 45%. Below 30% can cause increased colds and allergies (along with dry skin and damage to your house). You can get an inexpensive humidity guage (hygrometer) at most home or electronics stores.

Quick Tips
Drink fluids even in the cold winter months. Cut your body weight in half and call it ounces, this gives you an idea of how much you should be drinking each day. For example, a person weighing 150 pounds would need to drink 75 ounces of water and/or herbal tea.
